The eastern volume is crowned with a 75 m² rooftop terrace from which marvellous views of Santander are to be had. It also enables visitors to admire one of the most representative elements of the Botín Centre, namely its ceramic facing that covers the building up to the ceiling. Designed by Renzo Piano, it serves two goals, firstly that of boosting the lightness of the volumes and secondly, reflecting the different shades of Santander light.
Inspired in natural textures, “the Botín Centre skin” is made up of 270,000 round pieces, the sizes of which vary to adapt to the building. Piano refers to them as “somewhat resembling the cells of human skin, a type of pore through which the skin breathes”.
