The Disparates (Follies) are the last series of drawings Goya prepared to create engravings, but he never got round to doing it. They were published many years after this death.
In these drawings, you can see the change Goya underwent in his drawings on account of a series of negative things that happened in this life. The war had just finished, and all of Spain was in turmoil and very unpleasant. He suffered a serious illness that left him deaf. And if that weren’t enough, he had to leave his work at the School of Fine Art and the Royal Tapestry Factory on account of his deafness. As you can imagine, Goya was feeling terrible, and disagreed strongly with what he was seeing around him. That’s why his drawings depict the terrible state of affairs in Spain at the time. The drawings are more emotional, fast, free, and less controlled than before, and for that reason he draws using a stain technique instead of with lines.
In the Disparates you will find the fantasy figures that Goya used to tell us about things that were happening, without saying that they were a reflection of reality. Can you see them? How would you express something like that?
