ITINERARIOS XXIX

From November 23, 2024 to April 27, 2025

Itinerarios XXIX shows the projects of the artists selected in the open call for the 2022 Art Grants. As in previous years, the jury responsible for the selection was comprised of two curators, on this occasion Aimar Arriola and Soledad Gutiérrez, together with two artists who have benefited from the grant in previous years, Eva Fàbregas and João Onofre.

The six projects on display in these halls assert art as a fundamental tool for research into working methods rooted in a specific context, while weaving narratives about communities and knowledges that are hidden and unknown to different extents.

Patricia Domínguez presents Three Moons Below (53’53”), a video shot in several locations, including ALMA, the world’s largest astronomical project, located in the Atacama Desert, and the CERN Science and Technology Centre in Geneva. The video and the accompanying watercolours compose a work that is both ancestral and futuristic, spiritual and scientific, and that draws us into the world of quantum physics.

Laura Fernández Antolín has conducted research on sleep rituals based both upon their own experiences and those of others, which they have compiled through a series of collective workshops. This material is presented in an installation entitled Drive Your Dreams, which is made from discarded automobile parts. The installation incorporates materials for drawing, a soundscape, and spaces for rest, all for your use.

Antonio Menchen has created a miseenscène between the architectural and the cinematographic entitled 7:09:31, which is based on a collection of images of quotidian objects that he has compiled over the last fifteen years. The artist has turned these images into a series of sculptures supported by metal plates that are reminiscent of a film scene.

Alice dos Reis returned to their family home in Serra da Gardunha, Portugal, to explore the archetype of the UFO through a video piece. Our Lady Who Burns (8’) is an atmospheric, dreamlike film that guides us through this mountain and an intergenerational story of love. The four tapestries, embroidered with needlepoint by the artist, depict the UFOs that appear in the video.

Belén Rodríguez advocates for a simple lifestyle through textile works that she weaves, assembles and dyes in her stu- dio in a rural area of Cantabria, cham- pioning sustainability in textile production. The Farmer’s Jacket is the result of Belén’s exhaustive study of various handmade textiles from the Japanese tradition.

María Salgado & Clarisa Navas present the film Vía Versus (40’), which was shot in Formosa and Corrientes (northeastern Argentina) and in the town of Pousada and Verín (Ourense). Drawing from the histories and languages of these places, the artists tell us narratives that are not well-known due to the different methods of historical oppression. Two poems written by María are incorporated as voices within the sound of the piece, which you can also read in the printed texts located in the centre of the room.

This exhibition is accompanied by a publication (available at La Tienda del Centro Botín) that includes the research, texts and images of each artist, alongside an essay by the curator and researcher Aimar Arriola.

Since 1993, Fundación Botín has offered its Art Grants to support Spanish and international artists in their training, research and production. The annual exhibition Itinerarios culminates the course of this grant, reflecting a wide array of artistic interests and practices.

We suggest that you enjoy this exhibition on several visits in order to discover each artist and delve into their interests and research.
