Carsten Höller was born in Brussels in 1961. He is a researcher who specialises in the study of animals and plants, but first and foremost he is an artist, which is why we are hosting the opening of this exhibition at Centro Botín. This is the first time it has been shown in Spain, and we are convinced that you’re going to like it.
It uses art to make us think about the way we do things. For Höller, each piece is an experiment, and that’s why we say that in addition to being an artist he also never ceases to be a researcher and an inventor. For this reason, we believe his works of art are perfect for children. Children have a much more investigative nature than adults!
Udo Kittleman and Vicente Todolí are the organisers (also known as curators) of this exhibition, and they selected works by the artist with a view to emotions and to creativity. Because it is precisely these concepts: the arts, emotions and creativity, which interest Centro Botín. The pieces that Höller creates aim to send our senses slightly mad, to confound them. This enables us to feel and to live out experiences in a different fashion, causing our minds to begin to think in another way, seeking other ways of doing things. And we’ll also have some fun, so let’s get started.
Every one of the works you’ll enjoy from here on in is unique, and you need to make it work in a different way. In other words, you need to guess how it works and then play around with it. So little by little and one by one, you’ll move through all of the propositions that we lay out for you.
The first work you’ll encounter has the same name as the exhibition, Y, and if you study it closely you’ll see that the letter Y is designed in such a way that it is also a path which forks into two. Now it’s up to you to decide which of the two paths you want to take to enter the exhibition. They’re different, and they lead to different works, but both are surprising and a whole lot of fun.
Carsten Höller wants you to play the starring role in this exhibition, so… have fun!
