Carsten Höller was born in Brussels to German parents in 1961. He is a scientist and holds a PhD in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Kiel (Schleswig-Holstein, Germany) and, of course, he is an artist as well. His career took off in 1980 while he was still an agricultural research scientist. In 1994, he decided to focus primarily on art. His background in science, though, echoes through his work. To Höller, art can be an experiment, a tool that he uses as a way to think, and make us think, about human nature.
We have decided to open the doors of the Botín Centre with the first major exhibition of Carsten Höller ever to take place Spain, because his work is in line with our fundamental principles: art, emotion and creativity. For Höller’s exhibition, curators Udo Kittelmann and Vicente Todolí have chosen a series of pieces by the German artist that will engage your feelings and creativity to make you a part of the show.
Höller is mainly interested in questioning our perceptions, engaging us in experiences that affect our senses so that we can redefine what we think of our lives and our surroundings. All his pieces are unique, genuine ludic experiences that encourage visitor interaction in new ways. The element of surprise is guaranteed.
The first work you will see is Y, which lends its name to the exhibition. Y is a forked passageway where you have to decide which branch to take. This is how the visitor experience begins.
You are invited to play an active role in Carsten Höller’s show, which presents a space with multiple sensory stations that will change the way you see the world around you. Smell, feel, see, taste, hear… and while you enjoy the exhibits, try to answer the following question:
Are you just viewing art or have you become part of the experiments created by Carsten Höller?
