We Are Creative XII: Creative Cartographies
From April 5, to May 7
‘We Are Creative XII: Creative Cartographies’ shows the works of students from 95 schools in Cantabria who were part of the ReflejArte educational programme during the 2017/2018 school year.
Based on the Botín Centre exhibition, Julie Mehretu. A Universal History of Everything and Nothing, the students have thought of the importance of historical events and the individual past on our present and future.
Following research and motivation activities in the classroom and with their families, the students visited Mehretu’s exhibition at the Botín Centre, learning about her creative process and her understanding of today’s world. This understanding helped them develop emotional and social skills such as empathy and identification, the management and venting of emotions, and so on.
Back in school, inspired by Mehretu’s art and by what they had learnt about the artist and her work, the students got down to work, collaborating with other schools to create a single piece for each region in Cantabria.
All these regional creations were brought together to draw a map of Cantabria – a map that reflects the feelings, ideas and concerns of the 4000 students who were part of the project. The Artist Journals in the exhibition room, next to the main work on display, give information about the creative processes followed by project participants.
