In this group of drawings, we will be looking at the tools and types of materials Goya used in his drawings.

In his albums, we can find preparatory sketches, which he drew whilst he thought and decided how the final painting or engraving should look.

But we can also find free sketches he drew about what he saw and experienced. In all cases, the drawings are as you see them, without modifications. Goya did not correct anything; he just drew, directly. Sure of his hand, of his style, and of himself. The drawings made using sanguine (reddish colour) are almost always the ones he made in preparation for an engraving. By dampening the paper and then pressing it on a metal plate, the ink would become fixed. These marks would then act as a guide for his engravings.

In the other drawings, he combined brushes, pens and pencils, with black, brown or reddish inks, depending on what he wanted to portray. He practised and practised, until no technique held any secrets for him.
