Catalogue of the exhibition held in the Hall of the Botín Foundation in Santander from June 24 to December 31, 2016.
The new work by Joan Jonas, a flagship figure contemporary art, reflects the ideas and latest thoughts of the artist regarding human existence. In the installation, created specifically for the two floors of the exhibition hall, his stay in Santander to lead the Villa Iris Workshops, and his visits to the Valle del Nansa along with the Puente San Miguel historical garden take on a special relevance. The piece is composed of 2 videos facing each other onto which the images collected in his recent journeys around the world are projected whilst Jonas embarks upon his performance, a series of drawings on paper and wall drawings integrated in a colourful context. The work also takes as inspiration a poem composed from fragments of works of Japanese Noh theatre, taken from the book The Classic Noh Theatre of Japan by Ernest Fenollosa and Ezra Pound.
Notes on the piece from Joan Jonas himself, the text of Ann Reynolds and the conversation between both regarding this work, as well as the reissue of the texts of Ann Reynolds’ “How the Box Contains Us” and Lynne Cooke’s “Joan Jonas: The Seismograph and the Medium” contextualise the artist’s work, partciualry in this new piece.
